RelAx Your Feet

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: “Adulting is hard!” Between working, cleaning, exercising, spending time with family and friends, exploring hobbies, learning new skills, developing side hustles and more, life can become overwhelming quickly. Oftentimes, many of the things that I just listed are overlooked because there are only so many hours in a day.

Last year, I felt so drained with all the productivity/self-improvement I was trying to accomplish that all I really wanted was a day to do NOTHING – ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Because my therapist and I had been discussing how important self-care is, I decided to schedule a self-care weekend where I did…you guessed it, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I binged watched shows I had been meaning to watch, pigged out on my favorite junk meals and just let my brain and body relax. The following Monday, I was ready to tackle another week of being productive.

I know the world harps on and rewards constant productivity and constant movement, but our bodies weren’t designed that way. We also require REST. One definition of rest, according to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, is “a freedom from activity or labor.” In other words, we require time to halt activity and labor. We require this because God requires it. Genesis 2:2-3 (NLT) says: “On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.”

Don’t be so proud and stubborn to admit that you need rest. Matthew 11:28-30 (NLT) says: “Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.’” If you need rest, tell God and ask Him for insight. He may direct you to take a walk in the park, schedule monthly self-care days or take a mini vacation/staycation (Read more about my mini vacay in “Just One of Them Days).

Life is about balance. It’s important to work, but also important to rest. It’s time we prioritize our rest.
